Material Innovation
Baccalieu explores the potential of marine leather, a material made from fish skins often discarded as waste. By transforming this overlooked resource into a refined product, the project highlights the importance of sustainable materials in shaping the future of fashion and design.
Mastering the Craft
The bespoke Oxford shoe was chosen for its precision and enduring shape, allowing the qualities of marine leather to be tested against a classic silhouette. Shoemaking became a hands-on learning experience, where one acquires tools over time, works with high-quality materials, and develops an appreciation for the craft of handmade shoes. Mastery is not achieved overnight, but rather through a lifetime of practice, and this project marked an early step in that lasting tradition.
Bespoke Design with Purpose
Baccalieu demonstrates how shoemaking can serve as a study in bespoke product design — made for a person, tailored to an individual’s unique foot. Designed with purpose, it demonstrates how material innovation and craftsmanship can come together to create products that are sustainable, personal, and enduring.
